Why a darknet onion site will not load

3 min readReviewed

If a darknet onion site will not load, it may have an outdated link, a temporary connection problem or an offline server. The dark web is not a single service, so one failed visit does not tell you whether Tor is working or whether that site has closed. Check the address and connection before looking for a replacement.

In this guide
  1. Check the complete onion address
  2. Compare another known onion service
  3. Read the error before retrying
  4. Distinguish the homepage from a specific page

Check the complete onion address

Compare the URL with the original link, including its hostname and path. A missing character can send you to an invalid address, while an old path can point to a page that has moved. The retired v2 format used a short onion name and is no longer supported.

Dark web link lists and old bookmarks can become outdated. Look for a current address on the publisher’s official website. Use our verification guide before switching to a newly advertised mirror.

Compare another known onion service

Try an onion service whose address you obtained from its official source. If several known darknet sites fail, check your Tor Browser connection. If those services load but the target does not, the problem is more likely specific to the target.

The Tor Project’s troubleshooting page provides official test links and further help. A comparison is useful evidence, although it is not a diagnosis of the remote server.

Read the error before retrying

An invalid-address message calls for checking the URL. A timeout or a busy-service message can justify trying again later. An authentication message means that the service requires access credentials from its operator.

Keep the wording of the error when asking the operator for help. It is more useful than a general report that the site is “broken”. Tor Browser’s onion-service error reference explains the main messages.

Distinguish the homepage from a specific page

If a particular article fails, try the service’s homepage. When the homepage works, use its navigation or search to find the article’s current location. This separates a missing internal page from a service that cannot be reached at all.

OnionWay’s dark web search results are saved observations from its crawler. A service can become unavailable after a successful check, and an old article can disappear while its homepage remains reachable. A result therefore gives you a discovery link, not a live availability promise.

If the publisher has not announced a new address, leave the checked bookmark in place and retry later rather than substituting an unverified mirror.
